Write an Opinion Editorial (Op-Ed)
Looking to promote your cause, offer valuable insight or defend your view? Opinion Editorials, or Op-Ed’s, are an excellent way for individuals, organizations, businesses and institutions to articulate a unique position on a particular issue. Think of it as persuasive writing in its most compelling form. Different from a Letter to the Editor, an Op-Ed combines an influential opinion with facts, figures and examples to deliver a thoughtful view point to the thought leaders who often read a newspaper’s opinion pages.
Use the following tips to craft an effective Op-Ed piece:- Limit your writing to one idea or issue — be brief.
- Clearly state your opinion, or conclusion, first. Then support it with factual information and concrete examples.
- Avoid excessive formality — write in a personal tone.
- Use language familiar to the average reader — avoid industry jargon.
- Controversy is good, but keep your argument reasonable.
- Provide information that will enlighten readers without condescension.
- Limit your Op-Ed to 750 words or less.
